Concussions

Currently episodes of concussion, also known as Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), continue to present a major therapeutic challenge. At our clinic we have been able to accommodate a significant number of patients and have increased the scope of our therapeutic initiatives.

Laser Therapy has emerged as an effective and non-invasive treatment option for concussions and TBIs, offering renewed hope for individuals navigating the complexities of these conditions. In recent years, there has been a notable surge in interest surrounding the efficacy of Laser Therapy in addressing the multifaceted challenges associated with concussions, owing to its ability to harness the power of light energy to produce beneficial effects in tissues. Unlike traditional treatment approaches, Laser Therapy provides a safe therapeutic option with a long-standing history, characterized by minimal to no adverse side effects.

The therapeutic mechanisms underlying Laser Therapy’s efficacy in concussion treatment are intricately linked to its ability to stimulate cellular energy production. Specific wavelengths of light, such as 660 nm and 830 nm, are absorbed by Cytochrome-C in the electron transport chain, leading to enhanced ATP production—a crucial factor in tissue healing and repair. This targeted approach to cellular energy production not only promotes tissue regeneration but also alleviates inflammation, provides analgesic effects, and stimulates neuron regeneration, addressing the primary injuries to the brain resulting from concussions.

Clinical cases and research studies have provided compelling evidence of the positive impact of Laser Therapy in concussion treatment, with patients reporting improvements in cognitive function, reduced neurological deficits, and accelerated healing processes. Moreover, the selection of appropriate treatment parameters, including pulsing frequency and treatment duration, has been identified as crucial in optimizing therapeutic responses and outcomes. Preclinical investigations have further supported the efficacy of specific protocols and therapy regimens applied in clinical practice, emphasizing the importance of monitoring patient responses to tailor treatment effectively.

Furthermore, the utilization of Laser Therapy in concussion treatment extends beyond symptom management to potentially enhancing overall quality of life for patients. By targeting the underlying pathophysiology of concussions and TBIs, Laser Therapy offers a holistic approach to healing that addresses both immediate symptoms and long-term consequences. The ability of Laser Therapy to promote tissue repair, reduce inflammation, and support neuronal recovery underscores its potential as a valuable therapeutic tool in the comprehensive management of concussions.

Dr. Norman Doidge published the book, “The Brain’s Way of Healing”, the sequel to the book, “The Brain That Changes Itself”, the New York Times Best Seller, masterfully guiding through the burgeoning field of brain neuroplasticity and methods of neurological healing. He devoted chapter 4 to Laser Therapy with regard to the clinical results achieved in the treatment of cerebral concussions, other neurological conditions and potential long-range impact on clinical practice.
